About

What is this event?

Parkinson’s disease affects nearly 1 million people in the United States, and an additional 90,000 cases are expected to be added each year. Unfortunately, medical researchers believe many more individuals are living undiagnosed with this progressive, neurological disorder. Nearly everyone in our local community knows someone who has PD – even if they don’t have an accurate name for the tremors or unsteady gait they observe in a loved one, friend, or neighbor.

PD is a brain disease that has life-changing implications for those families who have a loved one fighting this disease. The Robert Conte Foundation for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, Inc. is a local 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide information and resources to people living with Parkinson’s throughout the Brazos Valley.

April is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and the goal of our non-profit is to use this time to raise awareness about PD with the support of local businesses. Saturday, April 5, we will host a free community event at Lick Creek Park called “Cow Art in the Park for Parkinson’s.” The public is invited to a free event to stroll through our outdoor exhibit of painted and colorful foam-core cows, visit with folks who are living with Parkinson’s disease, and learn some of the warning signs of Parkinson’s. With greater awareness, we hope more individuals will not simply accept unidentified symptoms as “life and aging” but may seek medical guidance and answers.

Why use “Cow” Art to raise awareness for PD?

We want to create a memorable message that may help people better understand Parkinson’s. PD is a “MOO-VING” disorder. Exercise and movement are essential to living well with PD. And except for local farmers and ranchers, many folks think cows all look alike, but in fact, each one is very different. This is the case with people with PD – the many symptoms of PD can look different for each person.

What are you sponsoring?

Businesses or individuals who wish to become a sponsor may select a “cow” from the various designs created by a group of volunteer artists in BCS. Or a sponsor has the option of recruiting an “artist” (perhaps an employee in their business) to create the image of the cow they wish to sponsor. The painted cows to be on public display will be approximately 3 X 3 foot. The price to be a cow sponsor is $300 and is considered a tax-deductible contribution. Sponsors will be recognized at the event or on our website.
